Experimenting on Ashley
As promised, I have now read "Attenuating Growth in Children with Profound Developmental Disability" in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (2006;160:1013-1017), written by the doctors who kept Ashley a "pillow angel." (HT Susan Nunes)
It is very disturbing. First: They don't even mention the mastectomy in the article, or the appendectomy. Only the hysterectomy. I find this troubling and telling.
Second: Attenuating the growth of a child to keep her from reaching normal size has apparently never been done before. It strikes me that this means Ashley was the subject of a human experiment, that might not have been illegal based on the intricacies of human research law, but sure seems unethical.
I have written a more extended column about this for NRO. When it is out, I shall post it.

Please have a look at the latest comments by George Dvorsky, in his blog 'Sentient Developments.'
He wasn't happy that someone criticised his hero, James Hughes, leader/founder of the 'World Transhumanist Association' and its offshoot 'Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies'. Needless to say, my comment was censored and not published by Mr. Dvorsky. But here it is:
"Oooh. Thank you so much for letting us know, Mr. Dvorsky, about this young man, 'James Hughes', a college teacher in health policy. I feel sure he must know better than the rest of us stupid eathlings abut right and wrong. We must all learn from his pronouncements. I've found some of them here, in Part Two of this web page, if anyone would like to check them out:
www.worldtranshumanistsociety.com
They include implanting computer chips in people's brains to make sure they think politically correct thoughts; and making elephants dolphins and monkeys be able to talk and vote like us humans, by genetically engineering them, against their will.
It all seems terribly exciting.
I feel sure we should all vote for James Hughes for president of the New World State.
Please folks, check out the names Dr. James Hughes and George Dvorsky, and be afraid, be very afraid.
And I'm not joking.
I know Hughes. Nice guy. Totally wild.
Nice guy, huh? Yeah, well... Hitler was an artist and big on classical music.
Hughes is certainly no Hitler. But I guess that ain't saying much.
Here's an interesting update I saw today:

Sorry, not sure why that comment turned out so weird with the long space before the link.
