"Feed me!" Part 3
The quest for the blank check to conduct human embryonic stem cell research continues apace, as states trip over each other to throw money at Big Biotech and its business partners in universities. Now, it's New York, where the new governor wants the state's taxpayers to shoulder a $2 billion debt (excluding interest), to spent over ten years, to compete with California and other states throwing more money at researchers than they can even spend.

Hey, you missed Harvard's announcement that they are going to build a huge stem cell research facility.
I used to live in that neighborhood...wish I had bought property.
I know the feeling: Like I said, more money than they can spend.
Great - just what New York needs - more debt.
I wonder what the state of embryonic stem cell research would be if Bush hadn't limited government funding and given his opponents an issue they could easily manipulate. I think its possible that based on the superior returns of adult stem cell research, embryonic research would have eventually fallen out of favor in the scientific community and would probably be limited to a much smaller number of projects.
Now, because of all the politicization, everyone wants to get in on the action and the industry is getting more money than they know what to do with. I'm guessing that many more embryos are being destroyed than if Bush had just stayed out of it. It's kind of like when one of those christian/family groups decides to protest some television show or movie that otherwise would have gone largely unnoticed, but news of the boycott just serves to generate more interest in the program.
mtraven, if you come back for a visit, I'll meet you at Au Bon Pain in Harvard Square :)
