Animal Charities Better Funded than Charities to Help Disabled People
This is rather shocking, but somehow, not surprising: According to an advocacy campaign to increase donations being mounted in Scotland by Enable Scotland, which helps developmentally and other disabled people live independent lives, animal charities help receive higher public support than those whose missions are to help disabled people. Note the advertisement of the picture of the disabled person over the caption: "If I ate out of a dog bowl would you like me more?"
That's hitting a bit below the belt. Helping animals is important and it is of concern when charities begin competing with each other. But, I have to admit, if this is true it may say something about the current state of society.
I wonder if the same disparity exists here in the USA and in other countries?

The brilliant, virtuous, insightful pieces you write, and then the work that sounds eerily similar to what I write when I attack a topic of substance.
I must admit I have a deep, abiding crush on you (regardless of that fact that you're likely married and my father's age). I'm a happily taken woman myself, but nonetheless: Dude, you're amazing.
Just thought I'd share that bit of inappropriateness in the most inappropriate way possible. I have no shame.
Please continue your work. Disregard your groupies. :)
Dear Jacuqe From Texas,
....back off, I saw him first.
LOL
All kidding aside, this is really twisty. I don't know, is it because people assume that all humans are more capable of helping themselves and others than any animals are? Or is it because they are more likely to be guilted into donating to an animal charity than they are to a human-oriented one? It's good to help people who want to stop idiots from holding puppies by the ear over a bridge for a sick photo display, but we have to remember that people need our help first and foremost. I can't tell if this is just a matter of advertisement being too successful in one area and not enough in another, or if people really have such effed up values.
But yeah, that was a sucker punch and it may do some harm to legitimate humane societies looking to prevent folks from deliberately mistreating animals.
Secondhand Smokette has steam coming out of her ears and I am blushing. Thanks for the support. : )
Mr. JacqueFromTexas isn't happy either, so I'll back off.
I hope you feel appreciated, not violated. :)
Wesley and Mrs. Smokette:
"Secondhand Smokette has steam coming out of her ears and I am blushing. Thanks for the support. : )"
Please let Mrs. Smokette know, if it is any consolation to her, that I still recall typing the words, "Dude, I wasn't even BORN in 1976..."
It is no consolation that I recall those words, too. And jacquefromtexas saying am as old as her father. Ouch.
I apologize. But you could just be flattered that younger women have a thing for you. It depends on your perspective.
Well, I've done a fantastic job of veering of the subject. :)
And to think I tried so hard to keep to the topic, too...
Oh, goodness.. I cannot believe you said that.. Picking my jaw up off the ground here as I continue..
There's a very, very sad series of articles running in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution right now, once again regarding the state of affairs in the statewide mental health care system, this time within hospitals..
I say I can't believe you said the below quoted because about eight, ten hours ago, I said something similarly different to the authors of those articles, not to mention a couple hundred disability advocates I gratefully, lovingly call "friend"..
Completely out of context but hopefully still to make sense, based wholly on an AJC teaser headline from last week, apparently when one is a call girl in distress, the World can't wait to rally 'round.. On the flip side, I'm here to say, when you're a survivor of mismanaged (mental) health care, they can't run fast enough the other way..
I, too, said it just shows our World does indeed have its priorities in line, fer shur.. :)
With respect to animal charities being better funded, being at the super grassroots levels of advocacy, it's not hard to see how badly disability organizations have to fight and claw for every penny, many times literally to save Human Life..
Realizing that, yeah, I don't know all the itty bitty details, but still.. Won't even start on the recent apparent move to take HUGE fundraising efforts out of our country and completely away from saving those on our own streets.. Just don't have the tears left to shed today to cover that one..
Sure can't tell which side of the fence you teeter-tot on, but looking forward to reading some more as Time goes on.. Not sure what it is about your style, but thank you for writing at a level this ol' mind can "get"..
Peace and best wishes.. :)
