British Medical Journal Study: "Secondhand Smoke Linked to Cognitive Impairment"

Well, you can't say you weren't warned: A scientific study has found that too much exposure to SHS is bad for the brain. From the story:

The research, published today in the British Medical Journal, highlighted a 44% increase in risk of cognitive impairment when exposed to high levels of second-hand smoke.

Not my blog! Tobacco.

Anti-smoking is about the only soapbox I'll jump up on and rant. It's insane that otherwise sane people, and that includes some members of my immediate family, voluntarily enter into this chemical slavery.

Cigarettes are as far as I know the only product you can legally buy in this country that used as directed, harms the user's health.

Still I do not favor tobacco prohibition, and I'll even smoke a decent cigar about once a year. What I tell smokers is that smoking is like driving: you can drive, but you can't drive on the sidewalk. Likewise, you can smoke, but you can't smoke where other people have to breathe your fumes.

I love it when smokers say, "Well, you eat cheeseburgers, and they're unhealthy, too." The difference is, when I eat a cheeseburger, the guy sitting next to me doesn't get fat.

I agree that cigarettes are a blight and a scourge. A cigarette is nothing but cheerless and efficient drug delivery system.

A pipe, on the other hand, in moderation...

And, of course, I never smoke except in the company of other smokers (or alone). I smoke only a few times a month.
