Merry Christmas!

To all the friends and adversaries of SHS, please accept my heartfelt best wishes for the best of the Season. Sometimes, it can seem that all is strife and madness. But while in many ways we live in the best of times, it is all too easy to forget that it certainly isn't the worst of times. Here is what Longfellow wrote in 1863, in the midst of the Civil War:

I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play. And mild and sweet the words repeat, Of peace on earth, good will to men.

I thought how as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had roll'd along th' unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men.

And in despair I bow'd my head: "There is no peace on earth," I said, "For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men."

'Til ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth, good will to men! .

As for me, I intend to drink a little eggnog, enjoy my family, play Santa Claus on Christmas morning around the tree, and give thanks for the many reasons for joy in my life.

Since you brought up egg nog:

Warning!: THIS RECIPE CALLS FOR RAW EGG!

6 eggs, 3 cups milk, 8 tablespoons sugar, 3 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 cup of your favorite alcoholic beverage (I'm big on Captain Morgan - my father pollutes his with Southern Comfort! Insult!)

In a large bowl, beat the eggs into submission! I use a wisk 'cause I'm sick that way, but an electric egg beater works better.

Add milk. Beat it some more. Add the sugar. Continue beating.

The mix should start getting thick. Pour in the vanilla, your fav alcoholic beverage, and nutmeg and cover with plastic wrap. Stick it in the fridge for three hours and enjoy.

Second Warning (for the people who missed it earlier) - THIS RECIPE CALLS FOR RAW EGG! If you fear salmonella, either simmer the mix on the stove (BEFORE you add the alcohol!) until it gets very thick and then thin it out with cream and the rum, or add lots and lots and lots more rum, and make sure it's rum, 'cause brother, that stuff will kill darn near anything!

You can also leave out the alcohol and just stick it in the fridge for three hours and then drink it, but I figure, if you're not gonna cook it, you better have some kind of germ killer in there.

Anyway, whether you feel like braving the raw egg or not, I hope someone gets some use out of that recipe.

Merry Christmas to my friends, allies, acquaintences and the people who want to shoot me dead where I stand - I am a better person for having met you all.

Wesley - I bow to your coolness and the fact that you can run a blog (I can barely get my computer to turn on some days!). Much thanks again for giving us a place to play here online.

To Ms. Secondhand Smokette - Thank you for letting us abuse your husband on a regular basis and thank you for keeping him sane when we aren't there to monitor him.

If I'm not around until January, or not around as much as I'd like to be, please remember I work in a Deli that cooks Christmas dinners for people, and I promise I'm not abandoning ship.

Peace out.

I am only an adversary because you claim to respect life on your blog, but you have dismissed our "putative right not to die at all." Why do you claim to respect life while denying our right to life?

If you deny that we have this right, why do you even care about how other people are medically treated or not?

Besides that,

happy holidays.

HellKaiserRyo, are you talking about some sort of right to eternal life?

Jesus can hook you up ;)

Merry Christmas to Wesley and everyone!

Merry Christmas, Wesley!

Thanks for all the work you do bringing us info. on so much important stuff. I haven't been commenting much lately, but I have been lurking and reading, and I appreciate your posts. Please don't think that relatively low comment numbers mean that your info. isn't getting out and isn't appreciated.

A joyous feast of the nativity to you, and a happy New Year.

Lydia
