More Feinstein/Hatch Deception in S. 812

I have read the bill several times now. Funny thing: Even though the title of the bill is "The Human Cloning Ban and Stem Cell Protection Act of 2007," the bill never even mentions stem cell research except in the title. The bill legalizes human cloning and paying women to procure eggs for use in cloning. It is not at all about stem cell research. It is thus a thoroughly dishonest piece of legislating. No wonder people are losing faith in honest governance.

Wesley, if it didn't purport to "ban cloning", wouldn't it be much harder to pass this bill? So wouldn't it be a good strategy to ban cloning with some other bill, so that this bill's true nature would be revealed?

Why don't we push into play our own version of an anti-cloning law that bans conception of children by any means other than the union of a man's unadulterated sperm with a woman's unadulterated egg? Surely there is some Senator we can get to sponsor such a bill if we made a concerted effort to push it. Maybe McCain is looking for something to generate some interest.

What language would you suggest if you were writing a bill? It should also prohibit genetic engineering, not just SCNT. I don't think it has to mention embryos or implantation or get into the stem cell controversy at all, it could just prohibit conceiving children in any other way than natural union of a man and woman.

Yeah, right... you've got the right idea, but nobody'll go for it. The minute you start saying something like that, you get this whole, "You're anti-gay, you're anti-feminist" thing going on because the potential for same-sex conception gives some groups the feeling of power.

Nevermind that it's not healthy to play with babies like that, and potentially mess up their lives. Nevermind that making clones to have babies puts the little people at risk and can cause more problems than they'll fix.

Homophobia is a bloody stupid excuse for grousing about your idea - I've got no problem with gay adoption, and we have tons of babies out there who would benefit from a two-parent household of any stripe, but the majority want to keep cloning a legal possibility, half because they want babies that way, and half because they want spare parts that way.

Feh.
