The Making of an Activist
I am often asked how and why I became an activist on behalf of human exceptionalism. I sure never planned it! Nor, when I began this work, was I aware of the depth and scope of the issues in which I would one day engage.
My path to posting this blog entry began with the suicide of my friend, Frances, in 1992. The current edition of my podcast Brave New Bioethics tells the story.

I am SO sorry about your friend, and you forever have my deepest sympathies. Whatever else may have happened, I know it sucks to lose someone you care about, though I can't know how you feel.
Thanks. I didn't get into the anger one feels, although it is in my piece in Newsweek. One of her friends took umbrage at my article, which is in a later letter to the editor. And of course, in another letter to the editor, Derek Humphry praised Frances for killing herself.
It is ironic, though. She was a Hemlock type. I don't know if she would be happy about this particular consequence that her suicide wrought!
