The Great Obama Straddle: Oxymoronic Stem Cell Speech
I'm finally getting around to reading President Obama's stem cell speech. It contains the usual bromides about how we are in danger of falling behind in science, yadda, yadda, yadda. But it also seems oddly oxymoronic to me. First he said:
I can also promise that we will never undertake this research lightly. We will support it only when it is both scientifically worthy and responsibly conducted. We will develop strict guidelines, which we will rigorously enforce, because we cannot ever tolerate misuse or abuse. And we will ensure that our government never opens the door to the use of cloning for human reproduction. It is dangerous, profoundly wrong, and has no place in our society, or any societyBut then in the very next paragraph, he said:
This Order is an important step in advancing the cause of science in America. But let's be clear: promoting science isn’t just about providing resources--it is also about protecting free and open inquiry. It is about letting scientists like those here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it’s inconvenient--especially when it's inconvenient. It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda--and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology. But by instituting "rigorous guidelines"--I'll believe that when I see it--he is tying scientists' hands, if you want to look at it ethical constraints in that way, just as Bush did. He just has drawn the line in a different place, apparently at reproductive cloning.
He also seems to be leaving the real dirty work--allowing federal funding for the creation and destruction of embryos and for therapeutic cloning, to Congress--as advocated, not coincidentally, in today's New York Times. Look for that story to develop as the year progresses.
He also said he supported funding of alternative methods:
...by supporting promising research of all kinds, including groundbreaking work to convert ordinary human cells into ones that resemble embryonic stem cells. But what he did in his executive order signed just after the speech was rescind the very Bush executive order requiring the government to make a point of funding that alternatives research.
So what we had on vivid display yesterday was what I call the Great Obama Straddle: He spoke out of both sides of his mouth within seconds. But always remember, actions speak louder than words, and on issues of concern to SHS, he is quickly moving from very bad to flat out awful.
Labels: President Barach Obama. The Great Obama Straddle. Embryonic Stem Cell Research.

I do think actions usually speak louder than words. To that end, I think we all need to wait and see what "rigorous guidelines" entail. Such guidelines may be nothing more than funding level limitations, required (meaningless) licenses or applications, or mandatory updates. Who knows? As for IPSC, simply rescinding an EO doesn't mean that IPSC research will also be cut off. For example, I suggest viewing NIH's update notice, with link to old application info. It appears to me that IPSC research was not changed, only shuffled - this could be because it is easier to just wipe out the whole EO, rather than pick and pull at it? (but I have no idea). Anyways:

Obama did leave himself wiggle room to tackle therapeutic human cloning at a later date - as long as it's not reproductive human cloning. And he left himself a safety net with the mention of "rigorous guidelines" - perhaps just rhetoric so he (or his staff) can contend that he is not wantonly throwing around money or stem cells.
Maybe the real take home message here is that Obama is a "skilled" (or slick?) "politician", or maybe by definition all politicians are that way.
Oh he promises, does he? How many times did he say that in effect during the campaign? Talking without saying anything is what he does by nature. But he's not the danger -- the people who elected him, and who didn't prevent it or speak out against him, are. Otherwise he'd have been impeached already. Can't be polite or give the benefit of the doubt with someone like this. Give them a inch they'll take your life.
I love it when people say they support ESCR "within ethical guidelines." "Yeah, we're going to destroy these human beings for research, but we'll be really careful while we do it -- don't you worry..."
What I have noticed is that the ethical guidelines permit anything that can be done today and draw lines at that which cannot yet be done. When the technology catches up to guidelines, the guidelines change. We are in a slow motion anything goes scientific plutocracy.
Well this is what happens once the word "ethics" is in play, which is why they've created "ethicists," "bioethics," "ethics committees," etc. as smokescreen, camouflage, excuse, and a tool to use on behalf of their own agenda. When things are really really important, polite society, whose meaning is profound, does not mention or discuss them. For example, food, money, sex, one's age, how much one paid for something. At school we were taught a few simple things that meant everything: Stand up when an adult enters the room, everyone has to take their turn clearing the lunch table, do not discuss the food at the table. The same world that now accepts and tolerates 'ethics' committees isn't doing very well with the things I just mentioned above. People with ethics don't need to discuss them or have committees about them. That's why the minute we hear "within ethical guidelines," we can know it's bogus.

I thought the speech was crass, demeaning, undignified and vindictive. It showed what kind of man he is and how insecure and how unpresidential he is. He acts gracious while putting down GWB and those who served with him. His speech says that opponents have “distorted and concealed” scientific data, are not open and honest with the American people about the science behind President Bush’s decisions and our views, Bush appointees were not properly credentialed or experienced, that we and the president lacked integrity in our advocacy and his decisions, and our science is not based on facts.
He's a bully. When a real crisis happens his name calling and hiding behind the bully pulpit won't help.
Obama Assassinates Hope of Stem Cell Treatment in US (Exec Order 13505)by revoking research of non-embryonic stem cells & the prioritization of research with the greatest potential for clinical benefit.

You CAN’T get stem cells in the US today even if they are from your own body. The FDA says you can only get drugs derived from stem cells. This typically takes 7-12 years & a ½ billion dollars, so…
Don’t hold your breath!
