Rita Marker and Wesley J. Smith: "Great Defenders of Life"

I am humbled to be in New York City tonight, to receive--along with the indispensable Rita Marker--the Human Life Foundation's Great Defender of Life Award for 2008, recognizing our work against assisted suicide and euthanasia. Previous recipients have included Nat Hentoff, Congressman Henry Hyde, Congressman Chris Smith, and Hadley Arkes.

My sincere thanks to the Human Life Foundation and my pledge to continue to strive in the years ahead to combat the growing threat of assisted suicide and other agendas that threaten and undermine the importance and intrinsic value of being human.

Wesley, thanks for having SHS. It allows some of us who have been your fans for years through publications like the HL Foundation's _Human Life Review_ to have personal contact with you and be kept up with news in your areas and your take on that news.

The Great Defender of Life award couldn't have gone to more deserving people than you and Rita Marker.

A hearty congratulations, Wesley.

On a personal note, my mother has had a serious stroke that has left her in very bad condition. It appears that my days as her caregiver are effectively over, as she is likely to have to go into a skilled care facility. Caregiving has had its ups and downs, and I am exhausted and broke, but I am glad I was able to do this for her and my late stepdad.

Her status will be clear by week's end. In the meantime I am preparing to move on the the next phase of my life, which will probably not include home Internet access and the ability to respond as I would wish.

In effect, then, after next weekend this will probably be goodbye for a long time. I will monitor Secondhand Smoke as I am able. Keep up the good fight and, again, congratulations.

K-man: You are the real defender of life.

I am sorry that your comments will be missing, but I am pleased you will still be able to be an SHSer.

Thanks, and keep in touch when you can.

Congrats Mr. Smith. That is a reward that is very important to your own human journey & I hold great respect for you, for having received it. . Tip of the hat to you for your never give up on ethics attitude. Such ethics as yours are the base of human compassion despite the claims that giving up on the wounded among us is the best path to take.

I feel that if Wesley wins humanity as a whole wins. Protecting those unable to defend themselves or to give them the tools to fight for their lives is a loss for our own human compassion.
