Forced Exit: No Conscientious Objection Allowed in the Culture of Death
The Swiss have overtaken the Dutch as the prime harbingers of things to come in the Culture of Death. As it grants individual intrinsic dignity to plants, its Supreme Court declared a constitutional right to assisted suicide for the mentally ill. Now, a debate is opening, the end point of which is to force all nursing homes and hospitals to permit assisted suicides to take place on premises. From the story:
In 2007 Exit carried out 245 assisted suicides by Swiss or foreign nationals living in Switzerland. Exit assists only Swiss residents and usually goes to them in their own homes. That would make dissenting facilities complicit in suicide, of course, which is the point.
But Lausanne and Geneva university hospitals and several nursing homes also allow assisted suicide on their premises. Out of the 66 assisted suicides in French-speaking Switzerland last year, five took place in old people's homes.
Jérôme Sobel, president of Exit for French-speaking Switzerland, told Swissinfo that the five cases "took place normally", but said some homes do not allow the practice at all or put up obstacles. The purpose of the initiative is to put pressure on them to ensure that terminally ill patients' full rights are respected. "We have encountered major difficulties on several occasions," he explained. "When we go to a nursing home to help someone there shouldn't be a stand-off each time with the directors."
Exit's initiative asks for nursing homes receiving state subsidies to allow elderly residents to receive assistance to suicide if they request it, in accordance with article 115 of the Swiss Penal Code and article 34 of Vaud's cantonal Penal Code. "When a nursing home stops us, they are contravening the law," said Sobel. Exit has until February 3, 2009 to collect 12,000 signatures in canton Vaud to force a local vote on the issue.
The Swiss proposal is not an isolated incident. As I wrote here at SHS and elsewhere, the last assisted suicide legislation in California, that did not pass, would also have required all health care facilities but acute care hospitals to permit assisted suicide on premises, with no exemption for religious or moral objection allowed, meaning that Catholic nursing homes (as but one example) would have been forced to permit their patients to be helped in suicide.
As the Culture of Death gains strength, expect more of this kind of coercion, an approach already occurring in other issues, both to ensure that all are complicit and to stifle the silent message of dissent that non cooperation with the agenda sends. The Culture of Death demands that obeisance from all.

Wesley, where do you see this going in Switzerland in terms of actively euthanizing people who are not even mentally competent? I ask, because the supposed right for assisted suicide for the mentally ill would seem to move in the direction of not requiring full mental competence for suicide. Is this likely to develop into a situation where Alzheimer's patients in Swiss nursing homes are given "assisted suicide" and where the nursing homes are forced to allow the "assisters" to come into their homes and kill the mentally incompetent elderly?
Please understand (of course you would know, but this is for any other commentators who don't know me) that I'm not in any way saying that this is all right if the person is mentally competent! Far from it. And in fact, this push to force nursing homes to cooperate with assisted suicide could have serious ramifications for people who are thinking of becoming elder care home managers as a second career. I have just been reading about the fact that this is something a number of people are doing in the U.S. in response to job layoffs, the financial crunch, etc., seeing elder care as an area of probable need in the economy in the future. But if they're to be forced to permit assisted suicide on their premises, many ethical people--esp. religious, but hopefully not only religious, people--will not want to go this route.
But I'm also wondering just how far this is likely to go in terms of "assisting" people who aren't even requesting suicide at all.
Lydia: I think this is heading toward voluntary euthanasia for anyone with more than a transitory ideation, non voluntary euthanasia for people not competent to decide but whose lives will be deemed to be in their "best interests" to end (already happening in the Netherlands), to an eventual duty to die via futile care, dehydration, and health care rationing.
I think that the right to life is being mutated into a right to live or die as you see fit. You own your body and it is yours to discard, and only moralists would say otherwise.
Just look at the Netherlands to see that your fear is already a reality.
Are they giving non-voluntary euthanasia to the elderly in the Netherlands by direct injection or still sticking with dehydration as a means? I know we've got the euthanasia of infants there, of course.
Some doctors give injections despite never being asked to incompetent very ill patients. It is called "termination without request or consent." Nothing meaningful is ever done about it. Even if the doctor is charged, since technically it remains murder, it results in a 2 week suspended sentence.
What a surprise. It seems that a really obvious marker for a movement aimed at the promotion of evil is a call for the banning of dissenting opinions with the force of law.
It was true of the slaveholders, the abortionists, the homosexual activists, and clearly the death cultists as well. I'd say it is surprising, but evil always fears a debate.
As the Culture of Death gains strength, expect more of this kind of coercion, an approach already occurring in other issues, both to ensure that all are complicit and to stifle the silent message of dissent that non cooperation with the agenda sends.
Non-cooperation with an agenda, that is REALITY; ain't helpful to your own psychological well-being!
NewsFlash: (i) The Earth is a FINITE ecological habitat for 'humanity', with FINITE resources. (ii) 'Economic Growth' is an OXYMORON in a FINITE ECOLOGICAL WORLD; (iii) Einstein was indeed correct: "The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function," and the results of that misunderstanding of how exponential functions and ignoring or denying them function as a boomerang, are well described by the French Riddle of the Lily Pond:
the deceptive powers of exponential growth (whether of population growth, economic growth, debt, deficits, etc.) and the apparent suddenness with which it approaches a fixed limit, the authors describe the French Riddle of the Lily Pond. In this riddle, the lily pond has a potentially virulent lily that apparently will double in size each day. If the lily grows unchecked it will cover the entire pond in 30 days, choking off all other forms of life in the water by the time it covers the entire pond. If a skeptic waited until 50% of the pond was covered before taking any remedial action to save the pond, when would he act? The answer: on the 29th day of the month! But by then, it would be too late.
Anyone who understands the principles taught by Dr. Al Bartlett in Energy, Population and Arithmetic; or by Chris Martenson in his Crash Course (exponential-yewgenics.co.nr); and 'Military Gospel according to Homer Lea' (geo-politics-101.co.nr) will understand that the root causes of terrorism are overpopulation colliding with scarce resources.
Religions future 'heaven' may indeed be a place where there is no such thing as overpopulation nor scarce resources, and where those entities are not held responsible by an ecologically finite environment, to refrain from procreating beyond the carrying capacity of the ecological home.
On earth, overpopulation, and religions, corporations and nations encouraging hateful population growth procreation; instead of loving zero or negative population growth; means that those nations with higher population growth figures, shall have higher population death figures.
Avoiding overpopulation colliding with finite resources, and the various forms of military, psychological, legal, spiritual, etc. of 'terrorism' requires humans to each one teach one, that in our future post-peak energy (oil), arable land, etc world; which can only sustain plausibly 2 billion people; not only must current birth rates come down very quickly; but death rates shall go up, (according to some upto 4 billion or so shall be culled).

PS: IGNORANCE -- of exponential functions, and their natural law application in a world of finite resources -- IS BLISS; OR IS IT SUICIDE?
Thanks for stopping by Andrea Murrhtyn: At least we agree that the culture of death is a reality.
I notice your icon is a black swan. Is that due to your acceptance of the idea of the need to expect the unexpected? If so, why so nihilstic? Killing the weak won't help us thrive. Indeed, it will sap us of the very empathy and mutual concern needed to avoid the catastrophe you seem to fear.
