New York Times Brewing Front Page Story on the Birth of Trig Palin
I have opined here previously--but admitted I can't prove it--that much of the hatred (and love) directed at Sarah Palin has to do the vivid symbolism of the Palins' decision to give birth to Trig, who has Down syndrome. As I see it, this act of unconditional love--in stark contrast to the current zeitgeist in which 90% of such babies are not allowed to be born--personifies many of the emotional and sometimes bitter cultural conflicts that permeate some of the issues we deal with here at SHS. Indeed, I suspect that for some, it is such a burning sore spot, they cannot let it go even if their obsession actually helps the McCain/Palin ticket.
As if to prove my hypothesis, the Drudge Report has apparently been leaked a head's-up from the NYT that the paper will soon run a full front page story on Trig's birth. Secondhand Smokette tells me not to jump to conclusions--and she is right. But I don't recall a similar story, leaked to the nation's news clearing house no less, about the distinctly private sphere being written about any other candidate. Indeed, we have been told repeatedly that children are completely off limits. I guess there is a corollary to that rule: Unless you are a Palin.
If this story even hints at being a hatchet job, it will set off an explosive backlash like the media have never seen. It may anyway. But I will take Debra's advice and hold my thoughts until the story actually runs.
Labels: Sarah Palin. Trig Palin. Media Bias. Human Exceptionalism.

"Advice," not "advise."
Since I lose nothing by going out on a limb, I will now put on my turban and long earrings, look into my crystal ball, and make a prediction: I predict that the story tries to imply (with some laughably flimsy evidence) that the Palins considered aborting Trig. She obviously had prenatal testing, or else they wouldn't have known he had Down's ahead of time. Perhaps they will try to spin the sheer fact that she had the tests as her "considering her options" or something like that. In any event, my prediction is that they are running this story because they have something or other up their sleeve, however weak, that they think they can use to undermine her support with the pro-life base on the grounds of the birth of Trig.
Gracias, maestra. (I am teaching myself Spanish on the computer.)
It is entirely possible (though this being the New York Slimes, I doubt it) that's it's just a human interest story that they know many of their readers can relate to.
Indeed. I hope you are right.
My "love" for Sarah Palin has nothing to do with her son,Trig. I will admit, though, that his birth is like "icing on the cake" to the whole character and integrity that make up Sarah,Palin.

The fact of the matter is were Trig born "normal," nobody would care about Sarah Palin's family and how she raises it. There wouldn't even be an article about it.
It would be seen as the sexist nonsense that it is.
This is still about prejudice against the disabled. The media need to lay off of Trig.
