The Saddest Words I Ever Read: "I Don't Have a Dad, I Have a Donor"
From Leah Garchik's "Public Eavesdropping" feature in the San Francisco Chronicle:
"I don't have a dad, I have a donor."--One boy to another--do donor's get ties on Father's Day?--overheard in a kindergarten class by T. A. Francis.Worse still: Many of us won't see why that is sad.

I don't know who T.A. Francis is. Is this supposed to be something real that somebody really overheard? That's terrible, if so. The reality is terrible enough, but the effect on the child is an additional horror.
Yes. The feature is about things real people say that are overheard and then sent to the writer of the column.
Is it worse to have a donor who is never present or to have a "dad" who leaves of his own volition? Seems like the second one is much worse and much more common.
Matteson:What is it they say about two wrongs...? We are creating a world that explicitly says fathers don't really matter, and we are doing that in many ways. That does not serve our children well.
"Worse still many of us won't see why this is sad." (Hope I remembered that quote correctly.) It is very sad indeed! We are too quick to believe all the lies that are fed to us! To believe it is NOT sad...is a lie. We are indeed a nation of sheep. Wesley, I totally agree with your response to Matteson.
