Xenophobia Against the Obese
This story is unbelievable. New Zealand is refusing to let a woman emigrate from the UK to be with her husband because she is too fat. Wouldn't want to let someone in who might cost the nationalized health care system too much money, don't you know. From the story:
Robyn Toomath, a spokesman for Fight the Obesity Epidemic and an endocrinologist, said the BMI limit was valid in the vast majority of people. She said she was opposed to obese people being stigmatised. Before anyone says, good, you had better be ready to go after all conduct and life circumstances that could cost health care money: How about people who sleep around? Ah, no question that they can be a drain on health care resources: The promiscuous have greater chances of STDs, HIV, unwanted pregnancy and abortion. But then, unlike looking down our noses at the obese, it is politically incorrect to judge people as wrong for having too much sex. Nope. The promiscuous get a pass."However, the immigration department's focus is different," she said. "It cannot afford to import people into the country who are going to be a significant drain on our health resources. "You can see the logic in assessing if there is a significant health cost associated with this individual and that would be a reason for them not coming in."
Smokers? Well, that goes without saying, doesn't it? But it is actually a tougher call than it appears. I mean, look at all the taxes they pay on cigarettes! We wouldn't want to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, now would we?
People with disabilities? They wouldn't dare. Unlike the obese, people with disabilities have political clout.
See what happens once this kind of thing begins? It's like the high school clique thing: Only those with unpopular unhealthy conditions will be punished.
Oh yes, did you hear? In the UK they want to prevent obese women from gaining access to IVF.

Fat, smokers, eh....
Fair targets, right?
I mentioned this same point in my anti-gov't-healthcare rant... HIV: ooh, you poor guy! Lung cancer from smoking: Serves you right!
Yes, but what if they were fat, promiscuous, smokers? That would pose a problem for the health police.
In that case, you must ask if they are bi, homosexual or have another popular twist-- if so, they are protected; if not, they are just scummy.
hmmm....I read:
"[New Zealand] cannot afford to import people into the country who are going to be a SIGNIFICANT drain on OUR health resources."
(emphasis mine)
There are two conditions that Wesley seems to overlook:
1. The condition must be a significant drain, and
2. It must drain the resources of New Zealand.
We all drain resources, whether we have unpopular health conditions or not. But that is not what the article states. Her condition significantly drains the resources of New Zealand.
Mean? Perhaps.
Unfair? Perhaps.
But I think it's equally unfair to conclude "you had better be ready to go after all conduct and life circumstances that could cost health care money" as it omits the clause "significantly drain the resources of New Zealand."
What's more expensive: being mildly fat (judging from the picture) or being HIV positive?
Or having a nice rainbow of STDs? It's not like a bunch of folks are going to catch "fat" from the lady.
Me - 30 years old, 6'0", 275 lbs. I take an anti-depressant and synthyroid because I have inherited an underactive thyroid. That's it. Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, all excellent.
My mother - 50 years old, 5'5", 125 lbs. She has Graves disease (an auto-immune disease), currently in remission. One eye protrudes and if pressure builds up too much she may need to have it removed. Her thyroid might need to be removed. She has to take several medications to regulate her heart beat. She has to take medication to keep her blood circulating properly in her extremities. She may eventually need a heart transplant.
Looking at us, you'd think I was the one with the health issues (except if you looked at my mom's eye, of course). In reality I'm fine physically and take a $5 perscription for my anxiety and depression. Mother takes about six pills every day and may need several surgeries in the future.
And they're bitching because the lady is "too fat?" Unless they know her entire medical history, they don't have any call to judge her by her looks.
Given that an anorexic woman risks her kidneys going out on her, killing her liver, and destroying her teeth and digestive tract, I wonder if New Zeland would also prohibit a person from coming over if she were "too thin."
I wonder if they screen people to see if they're Sickle Cell carriers.
