Time Out
Secondhand Smokette and I are taking our younger Secondhand Niece to Italy for a two week sojourn and a badly needed rest. It will be a busy fall, with work progressing on my animal rights book, articles to write, and an active speaking schedule. Time to recharge the batteries, eat some pasta, drink some chianti, see some history, and enjoy life.
May you all have a wonderful end of summer and I look forward to our continuing exploration of the important issues of bioethics, euthanasia, assisted suicide, animal rights, scientism, and human exceptionalism. Thanks to all for your continued support of Secondhand Smoke.
I expect to be back posting around the 20th. Y'all come back now. Ciao!

Arivederci!!!
Tell the Pope that Steve says hi. ;)
I would say I'm jealous, but I'll be in Costa Rica and London for my badly needed recharge.
I'm looking forward to that animal rights book. I'm finding it hard to reconcile my beliefs on human exceptionalism and merciful/responsible dominion over animals. Where's the line? Eating meat, or just eating factory-farmed meat? Using animals for work or using animals for leisure? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Dear Jacque From Texas:
I'm half-Jewish, half-Catholic, and was rasied that animals are for human use but belong to God, and that the best thing to do is tead kosher food because kosher law requires all aniamls be raised humanely, be killed in a humane manner, and be respected even after death (it's cruel to eat meat and milk in the same meal, for exmaple), so maybe that's the best way to go if you're trying to reconcile human exceptionalism and responsible stewardship over animals. Even the non-religious can get behind ethical behavior toward animals that we respect and use with care.
Tabitha.
