How A Treatable Woman Was Almost Dehydrated To Death
The publicity from the Terri Schiavo case has apparently saved its first life. Apparently an ill elderly woman was consigned to dehydration by her grandchildren despite having an advance directive stating that she only wanted no feeding tube if she were in a persistent vegetative state. She wasn't in such a state and had a treatable heart condition. Yet, a hospice agreed to dehydrate her and she went without food or water for a week. Other relatives intervened and she is apparently safe, for now. But look at how easy some now find it to deprive the cognitively disabled and frail elderly of all food and water.

The case in Georgia is being resolved with family members actively seeking a compromise plan. All credit must go to the probate judge in this matter because he made a directive that limited the powers of the temporary guardian, and according to his directive the grand daughter had to go with allowing her grandmother to receive treatment.
In the meantime, a new case was notified in Chicago Illinois. The 39 year old woman had suffered a stroke and is in a vegetative minimally conscious state. She can receive liquids by mouth. Her husband issued a DNR and removed her feeding tube.
Thanks to the intervention of an Evangelical pastor, the husband was ordered to continue the feeding of his wife. Once the case was highlighted and the right form of action taken, the state intervened in this case.
The husband was not happy about the intervention. Sound familiar?
